What Lurks... Star Trek Online & Guild Wars 2

Heya, Vengi here again.

This week I am looking at a different kind of creepy. A more traditional kind of creepy.
In particular I am looking at some of the weirder aspects of two of my favourite video games, Star Trek Online and Guild Wars 2.

Obviously expect some minor spoilers if you are unfamiliar with these games and their respective story lines.

Let's start with STO and talk about a very specific mission called What Lies Beneath.
Seriously, this entire missions has the staples and building blocks of the greatest horrors.
It has dark corridors, some wicked mind games coupled with cat sized spiders and
out-of-the-blue creepy aliens.

It starts with you and a team investigating things in a space station, you basically just get there and then the lights go out and the doors lock behind you.
Things only get worse when you hear a person screaming from behind a locked door, only to find them with phaser burns still warm when you get into the same room. There is only one entrance to that room by the way.

Not long after you hear "Bonnie-kin,I see you. Bonnie-kin, Bonnie-kin, what will you do?Bonnie-kin, Bonnie-kin,dress all in red.Bonnie-kin, Bonnie-kin, soon you'll be dead!"
Honestly that was some of the most terrifying moments I've had in this game to date. Finding the source of that weird voice is not at all a relief, just so you know.

There is also one thing in this game that needs special mention for the amount of paranoia it could induce. The changelings. They are immortal, liquid based lifeforms capable of changing into damn near any form.

Changeling straight up murdering a priest

Then there is the weird and creepy side to Guild Wars. This one is a little different in that it is not so much developers responsible for the creep factor but more the players.

See, if you go down to the bottom of Rata Sum, one of the capital cities in the game, things get weird. Either you end up dead, or exploring ruins, or if you are really lucky, in the Asuran prison cell with... them. Now I can't say much about them as they change almost each time you enter the prison. They are the players, but for some reason this weird unwritten law means that below a certain level of Rata Sum you will ONLY meet roleplayers.

Normally, roleplayers in a MMORPG is not uncommon or even remotely scary, but below Rata Sum things change. See, here you'll meet people roleplaying murderers, rapists, thiefs, and all kind of other unsavory charaters. Some claiming to have exposed that the city of Rata Sum is falling apart, which is scary in its own right, to others who just glare at you silently. They say nothing, but you just know something about them is off.
Rata Sum Prison

Oh, and did I mention that there is no way out of the prison unless you portal out or respawn at a waypoint? That means you are stuck with some vile characters in a small room and chances are they all want you dead.

And even if the roleplaying itself doesn't seem that creepy or weird, I find it disturbing is how the entire community knows of this place, avoids it like the plague for it is creepy, but also that everybody who ends up down there just rolls with the roleplaying.
What is it about the bottom of Rata Sum that drives normal players mad to the point where they engage in some of the creepiest and most unsettling roleplay I've seen in a game?

There are many other creepy things to be found in these games and in others. If you have any interesting stories or creepy experiences from games, please do share them.

Mind's Eye - The Jessica Phenomenon

Hi all,
Vengi here with a dose of the strange and the unusual for you.

So today whilst writing a short story for this anthology I am working on I stumbled upon an interesting phenomenon. Some background info, this specific short story is about a serial killer who only kills girls with the name 'Jessica'. It got me thinking about the name and if that scenario might be plausible. What I discovered was way, way more then plausible and downright creepy. See, the name 'Jessica' has this weird phenomenon around it.

Now this was first pointed out to me be my good friend Blinky. It would seem that Jessica, as a name, holds a very precarious balance in the world. Based on our research, for every Jessica killed in some manner, another Jessica has to kill at least one person. Now this might seem absurd at first, but hear me out.

In 1989 a seven year old Jessica Carr was shot to death by a 9 year old boy. The very next year Jessica Wiseman and her boyfriend murdered her parents. And so balance of what I refer to as the 'Jessica Phenomenon' was restored.
Now that might seem random, but there's more and it gets a bit dark at times.
In November 1995 a Jessica “Jessie” Hurlstone was bludgeoned to death. The same damn month, Jessica Colwell beat a homeless, African-American man to death. Was this just a lover's quarrel and a senseless act of bigotry by the two Jessicas or is there more to it?

We've researched over 30 cases of murders and murderers with regards to the Jessica Phenomenon and have found some really disturbing correlations :

  1. The dates are always close to one another. With the killer Jessica having her victim within half a year of the killed Jessica. This means that in any given year there seems to be at least one of each Jessica and so the balance is maintained.
  2. In cases where the killed Jessicas outnumber the murderer ones for the year, the killer Jessicas all have a body count high enough to keep in balance with the killed Jessicas. One in particular killed 6 people in one day.
  3. The method of murder tends to match for the killed and the killer Jessica alike. Case in point, Jessica Haban committed suicide in December 2016, 5 months earlier Jessica Strauss killed herself after killing a friend.
  4. If no other murderer is around to kill the Jessica that needs to die, they suffer freak accidents at their own hands such as Jessica Azadi below.

Other interesting bits is that it seems that neither victim nor murderer always has a clear idea of why things happen as they do. One Jessica Davies murdered a man in 2010, she can recall the knife going into his throat but to this day can still not explain what drove her to do it. I think we all know she did it because of the Jessica Phenomenon.

You might be asking what happens if a Jessica is somehow restrained or otherwise prevented from harming herself or others. Well, even then a life is to be ruined by the Jessica Phenomenon, as evidenced by Jessica Hicks who was sentenced to jail in March 2014. She did not kill anybody and I can only speculate as to the exact course of events but here's what I think happened.

Her boyfriend, Craig, was a known car thief, but he undoubtedly loved Jessica very much. I assume that she found out about the Jessica Phenomenon and in trying to prevent herself from harming anybody, she and her boyfriend lived a transient lifestyle with Craig keeping her violent urges in check. In his desperate desire to help the woman he loved, he may have committed some crimes, mostly to keep himself and his beloved Jessica safe.

However, balance had to be maintained and so when cops chased them down and killed him it only made sense that it happened in state where, by law Jessica could be held accountable even if the police officer fired the fatal blow.

Further creepy and notable deaths surrounding the Jessica Phenomenon :

Jessica Carson beat her child to death with a hammer after a failed exorcism – Dec 2008
Jessica Martel killed – Apr 2009

Jessica Azadi killed by falling fireplace - Sep 2016
Jessica Martin accidentally ran over a motorcyclist – Jan 2017

Jessica Simo killed a man yesterday – 19 Apr 2017

That last one is the most recent on our list, so if your name is Jessica or you know of a Jessica near you, do be careful as one Jessica is going to die soon.
